The United States Postal Service (USPS), which lost $20 billion dollars during the last two fiscal years, wants to do what all government entities do when facing revenue and business volume loses…raise rates. Called an “exigent rate increase,” the USPS is expected to ask for steep increases that will impose new economic hardship on magazines and newspapers. Some blame Congress’ inaction on the USPS’ request to end Saturday delivery and other cost-cutting moves. But its unlikely that even these measures could eliminate the bulk of the deficit.
Meanwhile, the Affordable Mail Alliance, representing more than 1,000 companies, is opposing the rate increase.
